What you'll do

Sow a grass-free pollen and nectar mix — at least 6 flower species, none more than half the mix, including at least 2 of knapweed, musk mallow, oxeye daisy, wild carrot or yarrow — between early spring and early autumn, within 12 months of your start date. Each year cut about half the area as flower buds form (late May–mid June) and alternate which half, so there's always nectar. Check for nesting birds before you cut. Don't apply fertiliser, manure or pesticides, and don't use it for access, turning or storage.

When

• Mar–Sep: Sow between early spring and early autumn (within 12 months) (first year)
• May–Jun: Cut about half the area as buds form (late May–mid June), alternating halves
